Islamabad: The deadline for submitting nomination papers for the post of Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly expired on Wednesday at the Speaker’s Office.
According to official sources, Speaker of the National Assembly had set 3:00 pm as the final time for receiving applications. Earlier in the day, a delegation of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) once again submitted the nomination papers of Mahmood Khan Achakzai to the Speaker.
Sources confirmed that 76 PTI members had already submitted the nomination request earlier. No nomination papers were filed by any other candidate, leaving Mahmood Khan Achakzai as the sole contender for the position.
The Speaker’s Office stated that scrutiny of the nomination papers and verification of signatures will be carried out on Thursday at 3:00 pm.
Speaking to the media after meeting the Speaker, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan said that the overall situation regarding the appointment of the opposition leader was discussed. He expressed hope that the notification for the appointment would be issued by Thursday.
PTI leaders Asad Qaiser, Aamir Dogar, and Iqbal Afridi were also part of the delegation that met the Speaker of the National Assembly.
